These free photos certainly make design work easier, but finding high-quality photos for hero images can be a real pain. That’s why I’ve curated the absolute best sites to help you find HQ photos for all your web design projects.

NegativeSpace

First in this collection is NegativeSpace, featuring a gorgeous high-resolution gallery of stock photos. But these photos don’t have that cheesy vibe you typically expect from stock photo sites.

They all look incredibly natural and they span a wide array of topics. You can find photos to use on a business website, a restaurant homepage, or even pictures to use as featured photos on your personal blog.

Categories are easy to browse through and the layout is incredibly simple. If you need genuine-looking stock photos then start with NegativeSpace.

Gratisography

Gratisography is probably the most unique site in this bunch, with thousands of some of the quirkiest and sometimes even weird free stock photos you can find.

Started by creative Ryan McGuire, these photos are truly one of a kind. Not only won’t you find them anywhere else, they are unlike any others that populate other stock photo sites. They are pretty specific in their uniqueness, so if you’re looking for that perfect fit photo (or vector illustration), you could find it here.

LibreStock

All the photos on LibreStock come from dozens of other sources. This site works like a search engine for CC0 stock photography where you can enter a search term and browse 40+ different sites all at once.

Since many stock photo sites are small, they also don’t have many photos. But the photos they do have are usually unique and not found elsewhere. So LibreStock saves you time searching all these sites at once and curating the results in one place.

This is my go-to resource to search all the smaller sites before visiting the larger ones. They’ve also recently launched a free video search engine as well.

Picography

Next on the list is Picography, with a constant stream of new photos added every day. Not only are many of these photos unique to this site, but there are thousands to choose from and more to come.

This site is easy to search so you can find just the right photo for your needs and you’re not likely to see it being used anywhere else.

StockSnap

With StockSnap you can actually make your own account and curate all your favorite photos together.

All StockSnap photos are CC0 and they’re certainly large enough for hero images. And since you can bookmark your favorites you have easy access to find the original photographer, the tags, and even related photos based on size/color and content.

Stockvault

Stockvault has been around awhile, and that means it has, well, a literal vault full of thousands of free stock photos available for download. Search the vast collection and you will find a wide variety of pics for whatever you need.

Startup Stock

Tech blogs and startups thrive on great photography. That’s why Startup Stock Photos has to be in this list.

It’s a fairly new website but the quality is exquisite. I haven’t seen these photos anywhere else so they must be uniquely featured here with the goal of helping writers & startup founders add quality images to their site.

ShotStash

ShotStash is a bit of a “boutique” type of stock photo site, aimed at “creative professionals”. With a smaller but more specific selection you should be able to find some solid unique options here.

ISO Republic

ISO Republic has a great mix of free stock photos and videos with a variety of subjects, including business, technology, food, and many others. One really nice feature is being able to narrow your search to videos only, if that’s what you’re looking for. All of their content is under CC0 license so you can download, edit, and reuse them on any projects. Awesome!

Foodie Factor

If you’re looking for high quality and unique images of delicious food beyond today’s Instagram fare, Foodie Factor is a great resource to bookmark. It’s a very specific niche, but this recently relaunched site has beautiful photos of wonderful dishes that will add mouth-watering depictions to your projects. Check it whenever you’re looking for food-related free stock photos, as they are adding new photos all the time.

Flat Lay Stock

New to the scene is FlatLayStock.com, where you can find an ever-growing variety of flat lay stock photos, perfect for use in mockups for logos, backgrounds, and more.

These are my favorite hero image resources but there are many others, like Free Nature Stock that you might like to try for free nature photos and videos.

But if you keep some of these sites bookmarked you’ll have access to the vast majority of new images right at your fingertips.

But free, high quality textures can be hard to come by. That’s why we’ve put together this huge collection of texture downloads, free for use by any designer. Some require an email subscription to download, but that’s all.

Altogether there are nearly 300 textures and brushes here, sorted into three categories: nature and materials, abstract, and brushes.

Nature and Materials

These photorealistic textures draw from nature, as well as man-made materials like brick and plastic. You’ll find woods, stones, paper, and dirt that make great natural backgrounds or overlays.

Whether you’re using a brush to carefully draw realistic grain on an image, adding a pretty foil overlay to an object, or downloading a futuristic texture to use as a background, there’s something for every designer here.

The simplistic style of this background is reminiscent of a watercolor painting. Upload a photo, and see it turn into a colorful spray of fireworks! It’s a unique idea with beautiful execution.

Firewatch

Firewatch instantly hits you with gorgeous art of a mountain landscape at sunset. Scroll down and you’ll get even more of a treat as the parallax reveals a new depth to the background. If you want to design your front page around illustration, take note!

Moonfarmer

A parallax planet set against stunning animated starscapes. This one-page website obviously had a lot of work and inspiration poured into it. Even with some simple panning and rotating, you can create something really beautiful.

Epicurrence

This whole page is packed with stunning illustrations of camping and natural scenery. The parallax at the top of the page is used to good effect, and as you scroll down, you’ll see even more pretty images. Take note of how the site’s color theme meshes well with the large illustrations.

El Salado

This website uses both photography and art to tell you about the story of a village in conflict. The graphic novel, though illustrated, speaks about a very real event in history. You’ll find both a cartoonish depiction of conflict as a monster and photos of the actual village that inspired the story here.

Branded7

This site is filled with all kinds of art, but natural pieces appear to be a specialty. Scroll down to encounter a beautiful parallax piece of a mountain trail that serves as your send-off with social media links. Explore to find even more awesome nature illustrations!

Angry Bear

This website is a real experience, top to bottom. As you scroll down, you’ll descend the falls, seeing the illustration continue between information about the company until you reach the bottom of the image. A very unique and clever one-page design.

ARK

You don’t need to create the next “Starry Night” on your website. A simple, minimalistic header more than gets the point across. The bright colors and stylized designs look great, and all the fun little animations are a joy to look at.

Daydream Creative Agency

This site is just really well put together. With a starry opening, a sky full of clouds that follows you as you navigate the site, and some great art, you won’t find a page more well-crafted. There are so many subtle animations, like the transition from night to day and the mouse animations in the background. You can even step inside the building!

Brother Earth

The premise is simple: An endangered species for every day, presented in a beautiful illustration. Scroll down and you can see the animals from the last few days. Plants, animals, and insects are all featured, along with a little blurb about the species.

Smashmallow

This colorful site is super fun to navigate. The homepage is filled with delightful background images, but no matter where you go, the illustrated header and footer banners follow you.

Cafe Frida

Here’s a cool effect! When you open the site, you’ll see an elegant header filled with flowers and leaves. Scroll down and they’ll move out of your way, but remain as an overlay as you read on.

Capturing Nature Through Illustration

Drawings of the natural world can look especially beautiful, as you’ve seen in these gorgeous examples. Illustrated headers, icons, and logos with a nature theme can completely transform your website and overhaul your branding.

We’ve collected some great sources of free Halloween icons, vectors, and designs. These will be perfect if you need some cute and spooky graphics.

Free Fall Icons and Graphics Pack

These cute digital icons are mostly made with the autumn season in mind, but there are quite a few Halloween examples in here as well. A jack-o-lantern, a witch’s hat, and spooky bats are just a few. There are both vector and PNG versions of each icon, so use whichever works for you.

Design Freebie: Halloween Vector Icons

Vector icons are great because they’re both scalable to any size and easily editable. These vectors use a simple, appealing style with cartoony monsters, grinning pumpkins, and expressive ghosts. There are 42 icons including both props and characters, so it should last you a while.

Stock images have a bad reputation for being distracting and unhelpful, but there are plenty of beautiful, professional and entirely free photos available for use by web designers. And we’ve already found them for you – here are some of the best free photography resources out there.

Unsplash

With over 1,000,000 images, all free for commercial or noncommercial use, Unsplash is one of the best websites to find pictures. Photos are submitted by a massive community of open photographers and semi-strict guidelines ensure quality. If you need nature or portrait photography in particular, Unsplash has plenty of those to choose from.

Pixabay

Pixabay is all about variety. In categories where other free resources may be lacking, such as in abstract works, illustrations and vectors, or technology/internet-related concepts, Pixabay photographers have you covered. There are quality guidelines, but anyone can submit.

Also check out the free stock videos, licensed under the same rules, and with the same variety of content!

StockSnap

StockSnap is another massive collection of free CC0 photos that includes business, nature, people, food, and a huge variety of other topics. StockSnap also has a good selection of more artistic content, such as flat-lay scenes and abstract wallpapers. With new photos every day, this is a great resource for stock images.

Pexels

Pexels gets right to the point: Free stock photos and videos, for use anywhere, any time. Portrait photos seem especially popular. For photographers, photo challenges with prizes and PayPal donations are great incentives to participate, so you’ll see many high-quality photos here.

Burst

Burst is a project by Shopify that brings free photos to everyone – even people who don’t use Shopify. The photos are contributed by the community and categorized for easy searching. Portraits, animals, textures, nature photos and backgrounds are Burst’s specialty – especially ones that are made with business and e-commerce in mind.

ISO Republic

ISO Republic has a strong mix of trendy stock photos with high quality resolutions. The site also includes free stock video footage with easy-to-use search to filter what type of media you’re looking for. ISO Republic’s photo and videos are released under the same CC0 license.

Flickr

Flickr has helpfully categorized its Creative Commons and public domain uploads, down to sorting them by attribution, share alike and other requirements. The website is a simple image sharing and uploading service, so it has no quality guidelines. But you may still find a keeper in here.

ShotStash

ShotStash is a great place to find free photographs, with a focus on providing resources for creative professionals. With thousands of free photos in collections and categories from Animals to Travel, you are sure to find what you need for your project here. All photos on ShotStash are licensed under Creative Commons and are free to use in personal and commercial projects.

High-Quality Free Stock Photography

There are plenty of amazing free photos to use from a growing list of generous photographers. Whenever you use someone else’s work, make sure to check licensing and terms of service carefully. Some stock photography sites are free forever, while others allow you to use photos only under certain guidelines. It’s better to do the extra research rather than end up in hot water.

How does 50 colorful, cartoony icons available for commercial use sound? People, objects, and technology are all represented here. Each icon comes with color, duotone, and line art versions – and in six different file formats! If you like those, you can also purchase premium packs or the whole set.

Ouch

A good set of illustrations can really make a design stand out, be it a website or a graphic piece. While it’s best to hire an artist if you want a totally unique design, using free illustrations can still give you the look you’re going for without costing a ton of money. Free Stock Textures

Created by two photographers and artists, this website hosts a ton of textures all licensed under Creative Commons Zero. From nature, to concrete, to abstract – there are all sorts of images to find here. You can also sort by tags, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.

There’s a download limit of 5 per day for anonymous users and 50 for registered users.

Rawpixel

Rawpixel is a royalty-free stock photography resource, which has a textures section that contains tons of gorgeous, high-quality images. Their Free plan includes 100 images per month.

Unsplash

Unsplash is a free photography website supported by a large community of photographers. There are tons of textures and patterns, all available for personal and commercial use under CC0.

Textures.com

Textures.com is a versatile site that comes with basically every kind of textured graphic you can think of. Need photos? 3D scanned surfaces? Panoramas, decals or brushes? You can find them here. The robust search feature allows you to search for specific textures as well as tags like “seamless” or “scanned”.

You can download up to 15 images a day with an account. From there, you’ll need to purchase credits or a subscription. You’ll also need credits to download larger files.

Vecteezy

Need textured vectors? Vecteezy is the place to find them. There are tons of beautiful, clean vectors available for download. Some are free while others require credit. You can sort by license, which is really helpful if you only want to see the free images.

Wild Textures

Wild Textures has textures of all kinds, but where the website shines is in its sorting system. You can sort by categories, tags and even by color! This makes it super easy to find the perfect texture. There’s also some auto-generated previews of the pictures used for different functions.

Stockvault

This vault of stock photos and textures contains everything from grungy patterns to the abstract. Simple or complex, you’ll find a high-definition picture that fits your needs here. Users who upload can choose from commercial or non-commercial use, or public domain – so make sure to check the license.

Freepik

Freepik has a massive library of vector textures that come in .ai and .eps format. Without buying a plan, you’re limited to 5 anonymous and 30 registered downloads a day. There are also a few commercial stipulations.

Texturelib

A small-but-robust library, Texturelib is free for personal or commercial use. Most of the images are inspired by nature, but there are also quite a few architecture textures – such as photos of roads, windows and doors.

TextureKing

TextureKing has a variety of grungy, nature-like textures, available for use in almost any commercial project. While the site features about 400 images and doesn’t appear to be updated very often, there are a few categories to pick from, and the high-quality textures can be downloaded for free without an account.

Textures in Web Design

When used correctly (and perhaps sparingly), textures are a great design choice. Use them to call attention to important elements, to craft a rough, grungy atmosphere – and to add depth and beauty to a flat design! With so many free resources, you should have all the tools you need to craft deep, gorgeous websites.

Humaaans

Humaaans are little vector people, available for commercial use in a free design library. You can customize hair, clothing, pose and skin color. The vectors are simple and match well with many design styles, too. Add some scenery and you have a versatile set of avatars.

UI Faces

Need some faces for your mockups, such as to fill an author or bio avatar spot? UI Faces aggregates faces from free photo websites like Unsplash and Pexels, collecting them for you to use. You can sort by various factors like gender, age and emotion. A super useful resource!
